Living Wall

Earth, Wind, and Water Living Wall

At 105 feet long and 12 feet high, the “Earth, Wind, and Water” Living Wall showcases more than 60 species and 8,000 plants. Working 400 man-hours, local quilt artist Murray Johnston and Canadian design and installation experts Green Over Grey created this living wall system to add a renewable and aesthetically pleasing splash of color to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Johnston’s design for the living wall includes plant life from the North Alabama uplands, through the state’s river valleys, and farmland to the coast.

Ferns

A variety of ferns can be seen on the living wall at bhm. Ferns are considered vascular plants. They reproduce by spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. Ferns have many uses such as food, biofertilizer, medicine, and even as houseplants.

Philodendron Birkin

Philodendron Birkin plants are hybrid plants that do not exist in the wild. They are pictured here with a variation of what stripes and pointy, oval leaves. This plant is from the Aroid or Arcae family, originating from the tropical rainforests of South America.  The Philodendron Birkin plant prefers bright indoor light and is a great indoors houseplant.

Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

The spathiphyllum, commonly known as the peace lily, is a low maintenance plant.  It gets the nickname peace lily from its resemblance to the calla lily. The spathiphyllum can reach three feet tall and grow big, bold leaves. As a tropical air cleaning plant, the spathiphyllum is considered environmentally friendly.
